Scholarship Eligibility    

The Mark McGinly Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an individual selected by the Mark McGinly Memorial Scholarship Selection Committee from a pool of candidates each of whom has been nominated by a Northern Virginia high school athletic director or guidance counselor. It does not require teacher recommendation nor principal approval. The scholarship committee is relying on the athletic director or the guidance counselor to choose one candidate from their high school.

Since 2002, we have had requests from both guidance counselors and directors of student activities to nominate students for the scholarship. While we prefer for them to settle on one student, we do accept and consider additional applications from each high school. The most successful applicants have been those chosen by a "scholarship committee" to meet the recommendations of our scholarship selection process.

High school Applying/guidance counselors should review the information available about Mark and the scholarship on this Web site. After careful consideration of this information and their pool of student athletes, the athletic director/guidance counselor should give the application to the student of their choice who best exemplifies the qualities of Mark. All Northern Virginia high school varsity athletes are eligible for the scholarship. There is no financial need-based requirement.

The selected athlete should provide a two to three paragraph essay about how they are similar to Mark based on the information provided on this Web site.
