On
September 11, 2001 an absolutely wonderful young member of
our community was lost. Mark Ryan McGinly, a lifelong
northern Virginia resident and a product of the school and
sports systems, was sitting at his desk on the 92nd floor
of the World Trade Center when the terrorist struck. Since
that fateful day, Mark's family and friends have committed
themselves to the Mark R. McGinly
Memorial Scholarship.
It has become their way of making something positive out
of the tragedy we have all come to know as "9-11."
A major fundraiser for the scholarship is the Annual Mark
McGinly Golf Classic. Following the first truly memorable
and very successful Golf Classic in 2002, $10,000 in scholarship
funds were awarded to Michael
Mattson of Marshall High School
in Vienna and Justin
Hardwick of Stone Bridge High School
in Ashburn. For a list of all awardees, select the year from the drop down menu above.
Through these young athletes, and all of those who participated
in the first tournament, auction, and dinner, Mark's memory
lives on. He touched our hearts with his humor and left us
a legacy of love for life. Hopefully, the continuation of
the Annual Golf Classic will be our way of always remembering
him.
The Fifth and final Annual Mark McGinly Scholarship Golf Classic, Dinner
and Auction was held on September
18, 2006 at the beautiful
newly-renovated Westwood Country Club. Mark loved Westwood
and would have so enjoyed seeing the new club. As always,
all funds raised by this event went to the scholarship
fund. Now that the Scholarship Fund is fully funded, the golf classic has been retired.
On behalf of the McGinly Family, The Mark McGinly Memorial
Scholarship Board of Trustees, and The Annual Mark McGinly
Golf Classic Committee, we thank all that participated for their
generosity and continued commitment to this important endeavor.
Very sincerely,
